Give Giving Dilemma

Q:
My niece is getting married soon. I hosted a wedding shower for her and bought her a nice gift. Am I also supposed to buy her a wedding gift? I will not be attending her wedding. A friend of mine tells me that you always buy a wedding gift in addition to a shower gift.

A: Yes, a shower and a wedding are two separate events. Since you hosted the shower, you were not obligated to give her a gift. Hosting the shower would be considered a gift in itself. However, an invitation to wedding requires a gift whether or not you attend.

Clothing Shop

Q: I own a women’s clothing store that carries clothing for women of all ages. How should I refer to the older women who shop with us? They don’t like to be referred to as “mature,” and calling them “older” seems even worse.

A: I would say that generally, women are turned off by characterizations such as “mature” or “older.” Best advice: Stay away from adjectives that refer to the person, and focus instead on adjectives that describe the clothes: casual, business, classic, cocktail, formal evening. Once in your store, shoppers will naturally gravitate to the clothes that appeal to them.

The Process

I've some questions in the past about how my custom design process works, I have on my website the process, but I also wanted to share here how I complete a custom water color illustration for either an original piece of art, a blog header or stationery. I hope you enjoy!

Step 1: Questionnaire & Inspiration Photo

After the client places the order with me, either through my Etsy shop or by contacting me via email, he or she then emails me inspiration photos of their pet(s), items they would like in the photo, or a photo of the client themselves.

I also ask the client a list of questions asking if they would like to be dressed in a specific designer outfit, if they want their dog wearing a specific collar, etc. Once I study the photos and the questionnaire, I then get t
o work on the sketch. I sketch out different or looks to see which looks best based on the clients preferences. I then chose my favorite sketch, which I think will match my client’s tastes and then email the client the proof.Step 2: Line Drawing

After the client, has agreed on the proof he/she likes best, I then proceed with the final line drawing of the sketch. I make sure everything looks just right proceeding to the final color rendering. The client also has a last chance to make any last minute changes. If the client does not want any changes, I proceed to rendering step right away.Step 2: Final Illustration

Once the line drawing is perfected and approved by the client, I then get to work on the coloring the illustration. My favorite medium to render artwork is water color, which takes layer upon layer of wet paint to perfect the illustration. Some custom illustrations take only one to two hours to render in water color and depending how detailed could even take longer. If the outfit has a detailed fabric/pattern, the pet has a detailed sweater, or the background is large, these things all depend on how long it takes. Finally, I use black ink to add the small details to the illustration, this is what really make the drawing pop and come to life.

After the rendering is completed I scan your custom design into my computer, make any adjustments or special requests necessary, and that is it! Your custom design is saved in my library to be used on any future orders.

That’s all! I hope you enjoyed taking a peek at my custom design process. If you are interested in a custom design of your own, feel free to email me at dawn@lydiaandpugs.com, I’d love to work with you.

If you have any questions about my process, pricing, or stationery design, just ask! I will gladly answer your questions!

Three's Company

Debbie from Sweet Dog Organics had a special request for her custom stationery featuring her three very different pups. She has 3 Labs with completely different personalities. Layla the Black Lab a mellow therapy dog who often wears a blue vest with a white therapy dog patch, Ella the Chocolate Lab, the queen of the bunch who often wears a light blue and brown polka-dot collar, and Reggie the Yellow Lab, also known as the wild one, can be seen wearing a green collar.

It really was fun illustrating each dog with a different personality, not to mention how often do 3 different Labs come together in one note card? This is definitely something Debbie will cherish for a long time!

Etiquette Wednesday

A few questions and answers from Emily Post about daily Etiquette.

Q: The father of a woman in my exercise class died, and the group is making a charitable donation in his name (as requested by the family, in lieu of flowers). But I’d also like to do something personal for my friend. What do you suggest?

A: A handwritten sympathy note is a great way to let her know you’re thinking about her. If you wish to give a thoughtful gift, then a meal, a plant, or a picture frame for her favorite photo of her dad would be appropriate.

Q: One of my coworkers doesn’t cover her mouth when she sneezes. Can I ask her to start doing so?

A: Absolutely. Sneezing into a tissue (or, if there isn’t one available, the inside crook of the elbow) is basic good hygiene, not to mention common courtesy. Next time it happens, hand her a box of tissues and say, “I know you’ve been suffering with a cold, and I’m hoping we can keep it from spreading. Thanks!” If she doesn’t get the hint, add, “Covering your mouth with a tissue when you sneeze will help prevent the spread of germs.”

Q: My hairdresser is fantastic — but she talks the entire time I’m in the chair. I’d like to close my eyes and relax. Is it rude to ask for silence?

A: No, but make sure you ask graciously and occasionally. When you’d rather zone out, say “Don’t mind me; I’m going to drift off for a bit. It’s been a busy week!” But let her chat on some visits. She’ll appreciate both your need for quiet and your respectful listening skills.

Lavender Ruffles, Yes Please!

Marion's custom stationery request asked for her favorite fashion dress: her lavender tiered ruffle dress! Ruffles are one of the strongest fashion trends now, and Marion wanted her silhouette similar to her inspiration picture of a dress she wore at a recent wedding. Of course the water color illustration wouldn't be complete with her pooch, Sinatra, dressed to the nines with his green bandanna!

Marion couldn't be more happy with her new personalized stationery!

Enjoy!

Valentine's Day Etiquette

A few tips to remember on Valentine's Day:
  • Develop your Valentine’s Day plan. Think about what suits your personalities and relationship. The simpler and more heartfelt the plan, the easier to pull it off.
  • Make your Valentine’s Day restaurant reservation ASAP—popular eateries fill up fast. Securing a spot at his favorite restaurant (even if it’s not yours) will make him feel warm and fuzzy.
  • Presenting your significant other with roses—or her favorite flower—is a sure sign of your amorous intent. And you do get extra points for knowing her favorite flower. (Men like flowers too! He’ll be tickled and touched, and his co-workers will be green with envy.)
  • Get the card now! Don’t wait until the last minute! What do you really want to tell the most important person in your life?
  • Dress up for him or her. Just make the effort!

Q: My daughter’s kindergarten class is huge. Does she have to give a valentine to every kid?

A: Yes. In fact, this is probably the school’s policy, but even if it isn’t, it’s still the right thing to do. Explain to your daughter that it’s important to give valentines to all her classmates so that no one feels left out. If she wishes to send cards or treats to a few select friends instead, she could mail them, deliver them personally, or even have a Valentine’s Day party after school.

New Lydia & Pugs Header

If you haven't noticed already I designed a new blog header for Lydia & Pugs! I've been wanting to spruce my blog up a bit with my watercolor illustrations, but hadn't really decided on what I wanted to include in my design. Alas, I have created my daily workspace scene I see everyday, brightly colored fabrics, ribbons, textured paper and envelopes, and including my cute pug sitting on top of the pink polka-dot ruffle ottoman! It's nothing like hearing your pug snore as you are busily painting and sewing!

If you missed yesterday's post, don't forget to visit Short Southern Momma for a chance to win some fabulous Lydia & Pugs items! I have been so overwhelmed with such wonderful comments, I feel blessed beyond belief!

I love to hear from each one of you and read each and every comment you post!

Cheers to a happy Tuesday!

Fabulous Header, Fabulous Give Away!

I have been working with Short Southern Momma on a new blog header and overall new theme for her blog. She felt like she needed a little face lift over at SSM, considering she is reached her 500th friend/follower!

Angela requested a custom watercolor illustration that shows she is a hardworking wife, Momma of a little diva gal nicknamed "Miss Priss" and chihuahua named Foxy. She told me her daughter does cheer leading at school. So I illustrated Angela and her daughter gathered in front of the kitchen island with her Kitchen Aid mixer, laptop and pink Blackberry at hand! And of course Foxy to her side. Angela was beyond thrilled with the final outcome of her header!

Secondly, SSM is also having a fabulous Give Away celebrating having 500 followers and her new blog make over! The Give Away includes a Lydia & Pugs personalized stationery set and a dog silhouette tote bag embroidered with your name or monogram!

Head on over to Short Southern Momma to try and win!

Ruffles And Leopard Bones

Ami at Elizabeth Anne Designs was generous enough to host my give away last week. I was so grateful to receive such sweet compliments about my work!

Ami requested a custom illustration of herself something girly yet simple with her favorite pooch Charlie, the Cockapoo. She is dressed in a rushing ruffles aqua dress from her favorite shop, Anthropologie, coordinating aqua heals with satin ribbon ties. Charlie has a favorite leash with a leopard bone attached. I made the leopard bone the highlight of her stationery, designing matching round envelope seals with the adorable leopard bone as well.

Ami absolutely loves the final design, the added details, and the fact that her Charlie is now on stationery!

Enjoy!

Etiquette Wednesday

From all the rain we've been having in FL this week, Hera in her yellow rain suit

Q: The couple next door has a big dog, and they sometimes let him run free. I’m worried about my two small kids but don’t want to get off on the wrong foot with my new neighbors. What should I do?

A: This is the perfect excuse to converse with your new neighbors. Grab some baked goodies, flowers, or a bottle of wine, and go introduce yourself. Bring your children along, too–that way, they can meet the dog, and the couple will see how small the kids are. After chatting, ask your neighbors if they’d mind keeping their pet on the leash while the kids are outside. It’s always better to discuss potential problems before a dangerous situation occurs or escalates.

Q: While I’m chatting with a friend, I feel hurt when she cuts me off to talk to someone else. What are the rules of call-waiting-shouldn’t it be first come, first served?

A: It certainly should be. It’s important to end a conversation to take another call, especially more than once. If you have the call-waiting feature on your phone and you feel you must respond to a beep, do so quickly and graciously: “I have to answer this call, may I put you on hold for a second?” Then tell the other caller that you’re in the middle of a conversation and arrange a time to get back with them. Return to the original person and finish your chat with them without rushing off. If you are indeed experiencing an important call, let the person on the other end know up front there’s a chance you might have to cut the conversation short.

Popcorn Eatting Pug

Lori, the winner of last week's Personalized Stationery Give Away requested a custom illustration of her pug Macy. Macy's two favorite things are 1) the sofa and 2) Popcorn, so a custom design of her pug lounging on the sofa with a large bucket of popcorn would work out perfectly for her design. And of course a monogrammed 'M" pillow for Macy and a decorative floor lamp, makes the illustration look complete.

Lori could not be more happier with the customized stationery! It's adorable, and best of all tells a little story of her sweet pup!
