Birthday Paw-ty Success

A few weeks ago I designed an adorable Birthday invitation and coordinating Thank-You notes for a special little girl named Maya! I just got word that her 7th Birthday celebration was a success!

Maya's Birthday included, the kids adopted their dogs, made dog tags and beds, hunted for dog bones and balls in the front yard! They took home their new pets, bone shaped cookies and even a pair of socks with bones.

Take a look at the adorable photo, looks to be Paw-ty success!

Etiquette Wednesday: Dining Out

Q: At a dinner out with friends, we ordered an expensive bottle of Chardonnay. When the bill came, they insisted that we didn’t need to include the cost of the wine when calculating the tip, only the food. Is this true?

A: Your waiter is entitled to a tip on the cost of the meal and the alcohol. The exception: When a wine steward, or a sommelier, selects a bottle and serves you. If so, the wine expert is given a separate gratuity of 15 percent to 20 percent (depending on the service, as well as the price and number of bottles ordered), and your waiter should be the tipped only on the food portion of the tab. Customers usually hand a wine steward cash at the end of the meal (he should come to the table when you’re done), but if you want to pay for everything by credit card, look for an extra line on the bill just for the wine tip. On a sad note...

Elizabeth L. Post, 89, died in Naples, Florida, on April 24, 2010, surrounded by her family. For 30 years Mrs. Post carried the mantle of The Emily Post Institute, Inc., writing more than a dozen books on etiquette, including five editions of Emily Post’s Etiquette.

After the death of Emily Post in 1960, Elizabeth Post assumed responsibility for carrying on the Post family tradition of writing and teaching about etiquette. She quickly became, and remained for the next thirty years, America’s leading authority on etiquette.

Etiquette Wednesday: Letter Writing Tips

Even in this technology based world we live in, there is still have the need to write hand-written notes and letters for both personal and business (especially on good stationery). And not knowing the correct way to write a letter could possibly harm you in the end.

Here's some tips I thought would help:

  • Always proofread your letter after writing it, check for sentence structure, grammar, spelling mistakes...

  • Proofread your letter again (and again) after you have revised it.

  • Keep the recipient in mind, and write in a way that he/she can easily understand the letter.

  • Don't use abbreviated dates, i.e. use November 19, 2004, and not 11/19/04

  • Be respectful when you write, even if you are writing a letter of complaint.

  • Business Related tips:

  • Be concise and keep to the point, but don't leave out any important information.

  • Try to keep your letter short enough so that it fits on one page.

  • If your letter is more than a page long, use another page, don't use the back of the page.

  • If you have access to company (or personal) stationary with a letterhead on it, use that instead of regular paper.

    Bella the Yorkie

Mary, a Lydia & Pugs fan from the beginning had requested a set of customized stationery for her brother's girlfriend, Stephanie and her Yorkie Bella.

She wanted the stationery to be colorful, yet trendy, but also Stephanie in a pair of jean capris. I decided to dress Stephanie in side-shoulder ruffle shirt in fushsia and navy and a brown leather belt to complete the outfit. I illustrated some pink flowers coming out of her purse, which coordinated perfectly with her blouse. And a matching pink flower collar for Bella!

Mary loved the final design and can't wait to give this adorable set to Stephanie for her birthday!

    Let's Paw-ty!

Let's Paw-ty in style with some very decorated and dressed-up pups! Jennifer's daughter Maya is having a big 7th Birthday bash with all things dog and pet related!

Jennifer wanted an custom invitation that was both cute and would really represent her daughter's party theme. Complete with colorful balloons, polka-dot party hats and a large cupcake tower, who wouldn't want to join in on this fun!

Jennifer also wanted Maya to have Thank You notes. So monogrammed Thank Yous with Maya's four favorite dog breeds were illustrated at the bottom with colorful bows and a pink polka-dot stripe was perfect at the top. Also coordinating round address labels with each dressed up dog made her invites and thank yous complete!

Both Jennifer and Maya couldn't be more happier with the final proofs! This is going to be one PAW-TY!

    Shih Tzus: Pucci & Polo

Lori requested a set of Custom Stationery for her good friend Gina. Gina is a proud momma of two adopted Shih-Tzu's named Pucci and Polo, who tend to be very photogenic!

Lori wanted a gift that was personalized just for Gina, and being a dog-lover this would be the perfect gift with her two little babies! I used an inspiration photo Lori sent me, and since the two dogs were both dressed in preppy pinks and greens I also added a Spring floral garden, which adds a cheerful decoration and color too!

Etiquette Wednesday: Shoes and Uncomfortable Q's

Q: Is it rude to ask guests who come into your home to take off their shoes and leave them at the door? I want to keep my new hardwood floors from getting ruined.

A: Not if the occasion is informal and you explain your reason. Since guests might be surprised by the request, though, it would be a good idea to offer rubbersoled slippers to anyone who feels she or he might be uncomfortable or cold not wearing shoes. If you’ve invited guests to a dinner party or otherwise fairly formal occasion, however, I wouldn’t ask them to remove their shoes-unless it’s a cultural custom your family observes. If you’re really that concerned about your floor, I’d wait to invite people to your home when weather permits outdoor entertaining.

Q: Several acquaintances have put me and my husband on the spot since we started looking for a house to buy, asking us the price of homes we’re considering and how much we plan to put down. We feel uncomfortable sharing that information.

A: You’re not alone! Although some people do ask and tell all, most others prefer to keep their personal finances private. And you should not feel obligated to answer such questions, whether you’re being asked about the cost of your jewelry, your salary, or your house. But even if you’re annoyed by the questions, don’t be rude in return. If you don’t want to answer, try a little humor: “The place we loved cost an arm and a leg, and we don’t want to give up lunch for a year.” Or throw out another question in response: “Why? Have you found the perfect house for us?” You can also change the subject: “Even more than the price, I like the neighborhood’s two excellent schools.” As a last resort, take the direct approach: “I’d rather not talk about it. I hope you understand.” They’ll undoubtedly get the message.

    Family Portrait Blog Header

    {Blog Header}

    {Coordinating Blog Button}

A few weeks ago Sara came to me asking for a more updated and personal blog header. She wanted a colorful and cheery header that would clearly illustrate the name of her blog, "A Note on the Screen Door" as well as, her family members and of course her dog!

Sara provided me with photos and descriptions of her family and family's style and I designed something that would relate back to the name of her header. I also designed a coordinating blog button.

She couldn't me more pleased with the final outcome, it truly illustrates her family perfectly in a portrait style likeness, complete with a dash of preppy fun, and sprinkle of a sunny day!

Hop on her to her blog to see her new design!
